The V&A London presents Diva: A Spectacular Journey Through Iconic Performers
From Met Gala looks to Marylin Monroe.
I had the opportunity to check out the Diva exhibition at the V&A London, and it absolutely lived up to its excitement and stellar reviews. Beginning with a historical journey tracing the origins of the diva phenomenon in the 19th century, the exhibition transitions through time, accompanied by the music of that era playing through headphones.
Outstanding trailblazers
The Victoria & Albert Museum's goal is not only to honor the most notable performers in history but also to delve into the personal dreams, ambition, power, and resilience that define these legendary icons.
'Diva' goes beyond the surface glamour to explore the evolution of the term itself and its shifting interpretations over time. Many of these extraordinary artists transcended their roles as performers to become activists, using their influence for change.
A two act journey through time
Structured into two acts, the exhibition first sets the stage with a historical context, showcasing how divas have left an indelible mark on both stage and screen, shaping popular culture as we know it today.
Iconic costumes worn by legends like Ingrid Bergman, Édith Piaf, and Marlene Dietrich paint a vivid picture of the early days of divadom, with Maria Callas' iconic gown from the 1952 Covent Garden production of Norma serving as a finale to this journey. Notable highlights include Marilyn Monroe's unforgettable fringed black dress from "Some Like It Hot" in 1959.
Contemporary icons and activists
Act two of the exhibition shifts focus to today’s diva, illustrating how performers of all genders have redefined the title, expressing their unique artistry, voice, and identity.
Sir Elton John's extravagant 50th birthday ensemble, designed by the renowned Sandy Powell and inspired by the opulence and richness of Louis XIV, exemplifies the boundary-breaking spirit of today's divas.
On display on the first floor, visitors can witness Rihanna's daring Pope-inspired ensemble from the 2018 Met Gala, dripping with pearls and jewels, alongside her sleek black coat dress by Balenciaga, showcasing her unparalleled versatility and influence.
Lady Gaga's iconic lavender outfit from the Golden Globes adds contemporary glamour to the set-up, while trailblazers like Doja Cat, Lil Nas X, and Beyoncé are celebrated for their role in championing diversity and empowerment.
'Diva' promises a mesmerizing journey through the world of iconic performers and cultural influencers. The unforgettable experience is running until April 7, 2024, at the V&A Museum in London.
