POSTED BY MEGAN PISTON

This past week, London-based label Chopova Lowena was declared the winner of the 2024 British Fashion Council/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund. Established in 2008, this prestigious fund recognizes exceptional talent and supports them in their creative endeavors, highlighting rising stars within the fashion industry. As a collaborative effort between the BFC and Vogue, Chopova Lowena will be presented with a cash reward of $190,000 along with access to premier fashion design mentorship.

Founded in 2017 by Emma Chopova and Laura Lowena, Chopova Lowena is renowned for its unique blend of folklore, punk, and streetwear. The designer label has gained popularity due to its eccentric and distinctive approach to fashion, epitomized by their signature mixed-pattern carabiner skirts. The unconventional designs of the brand have quickly become cult classics, resonating from London to across Europe, Asia, and the Americas

A true homage to maximalism, Chopova Lowena’s designs seamlessly incorporate innovative textiles, peculiar graphics, patterns, and prints, and bright pops of color. Beyond their kilt-inspired skirts, the fashion label offers a diverse array of products, including crochet t-shirts, ballet flats, delicate smocked dresses, and intricate handbags.

While Chopova Lowena designs apparel for both women and men, their creations often carry a candid taste of femininity, making the label particularly favored by women.

Recent achievements from the brand include their Spring/Summer 2024 exclusives for SSENSE, for whom they created a variety of wedding-inspired garments such as a white veil, beaded gloves, a garter and camisole, a scrunch bag, and a stunning carabiner maxi dress.

The continuation of Chopova Lowena’s SS24 collection, which appears heavily steampunk-inspired, perfectly displays the label’s penchant for quirky aesthetics. Featuring an abundance of layering and the seamless combination of contrasting textiles and details, the brand’s latest clothing line demonstrates their commitment to embracing the weird and unusual.

With a fresh take on the fashion industry, Chopova Lowena stays true to their ideology of concentrating on sustainability and craft through the use of deadstock textiles and recycled materials. The brand is keen on creating job opportunities for female artisans from Bulgaria, from where they have cultivated much of their folklore inspiration.

At the end of the day, who better to award the renowned fund than emerging designers who continuously showcase their unwavering vision and creativity? Emma Chopova and Laura Lowena have got what the everchanging fashion world is all about, and the whole industry is anticipating what turn they’ll take next—chances are, they’ll stray from the traditional path yet again.
