Red Carpet Rewind: Celebrities Embrace Sustainable Fashion By Revisiting Iconic Looks
Who re-wore it best?
Naomi Campbell shined on the red carpet for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga at Cannes Film Festival in a Fall ‘97 couture Chanel dress yesterday. The look oozed glamour and history in more ways than one. Naomi had been the one to walk the original dress down the runway in 1996.
In a fashion world that strives to be more sustainable, celebrities have been re-wearing their own looks to promote re-using and re-cycling. After all, if a supermodel can be an outfit repeater in front of countless flashing lights why can’t we?
Here are five celebrity looks that deserved their reprise:
Cate Blanchett - Alexander McQueen Bodice
The intricately embroidered Alexander McQueen bodice first made an appearance on the BAFTAs red carpet in 2016, then it was paired with a floor-length black feathered skirt. At the Venice Film Festival in 2020, Blanchett revived the bodice and wore it alongside sleek black suit-pants and platforms.
Elizabeth Banks - Badgley Mischka Dress
The striking red Badgley Mischka dress was first worn by Banks at the Vanity Fair Oscars party in 2004. Back then it was styled with an elegant updo and statement earrings. At the 2020 Academy Awards, the dress was brought out of storage and worn with a chic bob and pearl drop necklace.
Laura Dern – Armani Prive Gown.
Laura Dern has worn a sleek black cutout Armani Prive gown on three separate occasions. First to a gala in 1995, then to the 2013 Oscars, and again at the 2020 Oscars. She’s a true outfit-repeater.
Tiffany Haddish – Alexander McQueen Gown.
This white Alexander McQueen gown with an embroidered high neckline is a Tiffany Haddish staple. She’s worn it to two premiers, the 2018 Academy Awards, the 2018 MTV Movie and TV Awards, to an appearance on David Letterman in 2019 and to host SNL in 2017. If any dress screams good luck it's this one.
Kiera Knightly – Chanel Tea Dress.
Kiera Knightly re-wore the Chanel tea dress that she’d worn for the 2008 pre-BAFTA party for her wedding in 2013! She then wore it again to the SeriousFun London Gala in 2013.
Red-carpet re-wearing is a trend that isn’t going anywhere.
