Decoding The Cool Girl Aesthetic: Embracing Individuality In Style And Attitude

The many styles of cool.

POSTED BY LIZZY SWINERD

When searching ‘cool girl aesthetic’ on Pinterest, you are met with a series of images depicting the life of a girl who embodies two main qualities – she is stylish, and she doesn’t care.

She doesn’t care that there are (essential) cool girl items spilling out of her tote bag, or that her hair is a mess. There are a few things that weave a common thread through the aesthetic: a video camera (for capturing outings with fellow cool girls), a red lipstick (for applying while looking in a phone camera), and a leather jacket (an item that has been the cool girl staple since the dawn of time).

Diverse Expressions of Cool Girl Aesthetic

However, one thing is obvious when scouring the internet for tips on how to achieve the aesthetic – none of the cool girls look the same.

Some spend their days doing road trips in a t-shirt and denim shorts with their legs hanging out of the window of a red convertible. Others sleep all day, wake up to apply smudged mascara and cherry-red lipstick, and spend the night running around a city like London or New York.

Variations in Style and Setting

Some cool girls like their hair to be slicked back, and they like to wear sunglasses and tops with thin spaghetti straps. Others are on their way to the library, wearing oversized shirts and jeans with headphones pulled over messy hair.

A Melting Pot of Sub-Aesthetics

The cool girl aesthetic seems to be a melting pot of all the ‘girls’ we have collected over the last few years – clean girl, party girl, academia girl, that girl. All girls are cool girls.
