Fashion Week pays tribute to the late Vivienne Westwood celebrating her stamp on the fashion industry. We couldn’t help but focus our attention on the surprise guest, who was not only a guest but a model in the show! Sam Smith made their debut on the runway during the Vivienne Westwood fall 2024 ready-to-wear presentation on Saturday as part of Paris Fashion Week. The singer glided down the runway in two dramatic looks from the Renaissance-inspired collection.

Who was Vivienne Westwood?

Vivienne Westwood was an infamous British fashion designer who rose to fame in the 1970s. She is best known for her avant-garde designs, which helped to define the punk and romanticism scenes. She has also had an influential role in the sustainable fashion movement and was an outspoken critic of capitalism.

Vivienne Westwood created the unique style of fashion we know today, punk. Westwood's designs were heavily influenced by the alternative aesthetic, which rejected mainstream values and celebrated individualism and rebellion. This style was showcased in this year's FW24 for Vivienne Westwood, where her designs often featured unconventional materials such as leather jackets, bondage trousers, and safety pins on clothing. But most importantly tartan looks, which is what Sam Smith presented us with.

Sam’s First Look

The British icon's first appearance stayed true to Westwoods style with bright colors! The ensemble consisted of a light green long-sleeve top under a scarf-shawl in burnt orange with checkered prints. On the bottom half of the look, Sam wore a pair of high-rise tartan, print shorts with large checkered socks and a pair of heeled plaid platform boots. To add that extra Renaissance feel to the look, Smith walked with a large wooden walk.

Sam’s Second Look

Smith’s second look directly contrasted their first look, with an all-black garment that focused on the idea of layering and shedding. It featured a mesh halter top and a floor-length ruffled dress, with multiple slashes where Smith's skin was exposed. Styled with a large tulle-adorned hat, pair of fingerless gloves and oversized leather handbag to add to the exaggerated punk look.
