How To Find Your Perfect Nude Lipstick
Your quest for the perfect neutral just got easier.
Everybody needs a perfect, go-to nude lipstick. And, with beauty trends focused on skincare, glowy-ness, and natural-looking makeup routines, the perfect nude is more vital and elusive than ever (we’re talking about lipstick here… weirdo.)
Now, we all know there are tons of different skin tones and undertones, so of course, there’s no one-size-fits-all nude lip color. Because of all the options available, it’s hard to know if your nude is doing you justice. Fear not, bestie! We’re here to help you find your perfect match.
First things first: if you haven’t tried the old nipple trick (yes-- you read that right,) it’s worth a shot to see if the nude you’ve been using is right for you. The goal is to get a lipstick that’s as close to the same color as your nipple as possible. It sounds weird, but it works.
Now, nip slips in Sephora are usually frowned upon, so if you’re in the store, a great way to narrow down the right color is to take a tester and try it on your hand to see how it goes with your skin tone. It sounds simple, but it’s important to see your skin’s undertones with the lipstick when it’s actually out of the tube.
Beyond that, you’ve just gotta dive in and start trying some out. Here are some of our all-time favorite nude lipsticks for different skin tones:
NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Cannes
For lighter skin, light pink undertones are key to keeping you looking fresh and not like… well, a corpse. Our pick is NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream. It’s a nice matte finish that goes on super smoothly. (And, not for nothing-- it also smells amazing.) We love the color, Cannes.

Buxom Full-On Plumping Lip Cream Gloss in Mudslide
Those with lighter skin (or with any skin tone who just love a little shine) can benefit from extra dimension added to their lip color. Layer a dab of lip gloss on your matte nude lip of choice. We love Buxom Full-On Plumping Lip Cream Gloss, because it adds sheen and a little plumping, which never hurt anybody. Mudslide is a perfect layer on top of your pinky nude lipstick.

MAC Matte Lipstick in Taupe
For those with olive skin, MAC Cosmetics makeup artist, Abby Sparks, told Stylecaster you should “choose a shade darker than your skin, with caramel (for those with warm undertones) or pink (for cool undertones).” MAC matte lipstick is soft and creamy, and the Taupe shade is *chef kiss.*

Glossier Generation G in Leo
Glossier is kind of the queen of barely-there-looking makeup, so of course, they’ve got a perfect nude lipstick. If you’ve got warmer brown skin, the Leo shade will give you some perfectly subtle peachiness while feeling like a lip balm.

Pat McGrath Mattetrance Lipstick in Venus in Furs
Pat McGrath’s Mattetrance Lipstick is the perfect pick for lightweight, but opaque color. For medium brown skin tones with cooler or more neutral undertones, we love Venus in Furs.

ColourPop Lippie Stix in Brat Pack
If you haven’t tried ColourPop Lippie Stix yet, you probably don’t know the full capabilities of lipstick staying power. Seriously-- this lipstick is made to last. Celebrity makeup artist, Fiona Stiles, told Byrdie "For women of color, it's all about playing with highlights and shadows to build definition," So if you have darker skin, she recommends going with something a bit lighter than your actual skin tone that has a bit of sheen. Lippie Stix in Brat Pack is the perfect shade and has a creamy, light-catching finish. Plus, it’s got shea butter and Vitamin E to keep your lips healthy and soft.
