When to Break Up with Your Makeup

No More Holding onto that 4-Year-Expired Mascara.

POSTED BY MADELINE MURPHY

Most of us are guilty of holding on to our favorite makeup products long past their expiration date. In the depths of my makeup bag, beneath a layer of powder and bronzer brushes, I have an eyeshadow palette that I purchased before my sixth grade semi-formal. Now, keeping makeup from middle school is definitely pushing it, but what about those products that we bought just a couple years ago? When is it time to stop adding hot water to a mascara tube and just toss it out?

Continue reading for the recommended times to keep specific makeup products.

SPF

I’m definitely in the bad habit of only wearing sunscreen in the summer. So when I return to my sunscreen each year, I feel like I hardly made a dent in the bottle. Unfortunately though, it’s best to replace sunscreen every season. This ensures that the ingredients can most effectively block and absorb UV rays.

Foundation, Concealer, and Powder

After about a year, we should be tossing our foundations and concealers. However, if the makeup seems to change in color or consistency, it should be thrown out even sooner. The same applies to powder.

Lip Products

It’s hard to let go of our favorite lip products (I know I have an emotional attachment to my Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Lipstick). It’s best to not keep lipsticks, glosses, or lip liners for more than a year, though.

Eye Products

Products such as mascara, eye pencils, and liquid liners should not be used for more than six months (or three months to be on the safe side). Eyes are a highly sensitive area, and bacteria can start to grow if products are used for too long.

Hope this inspires you to finally clean out your makeup bag!
