90's Movies/TV Shows That Have Influenced Our Style Choices

90’s cinema has affected our style choices a lot more than you might think.

POSTED BY ELSIE FAULKNER

The world of cinema and the world of fashion are two that are constantly colliding but complimenting each other regardless. Costuming and fashion are two things that coincide massively, and the films and TV shows we watch can really help to impact our own senses of style, and the trends that we follow.

The 90's and its impact: an introduction

The 90’s is a decade that is a brilliant example of how this can happen. This decade in particular is one that has helped shape (and continues to help shape) our personal styles, but also trends generally, and the wider world of fashion. When it comes to the cinematic masterpieces that this decade produced, we can really see how our own styles and trends have been positively impacted by them.

Let’s briefly talk about a few examples of iconic shows and movies from the ‘90s that have helped the fashion world, and the trends that we now have grown to love and care for. This decade has, after all, helped to bring about some of our best loved trends like graphic tees and knee-high boots. And where would we be without things like these?

F.R.I.E.N.D.S

As a friends fanatic myself, I can tell you that this show’s style really has influenced and impacted us all. From Phoebe’s gorgeous vintage maxi dresses, to Rachel’s iconic green slip dress, and the guys’ many flannel shirts...you can see how the costuming of these characters has influenced later generations to come.

The Fresh Prince of Bel Aire

From mom jeans and denim shirts, to sweater vests and all things checkered, this show knew how to create pure lewks, ensuring that we were all caught in a 90’s time capsule. We sure as hell aren’t complaining though because the trends now still circulating from this show are making us all look just as cool as Will Smith.

Clueless

This is a timeless movie in itself, and the costuming of the characters only amplifies this. Of course we have to focus on two queens: Cher and Dionne. The checked, school fits that both girls wore were simply to die for. Pleated skirts and fitted blazers? Yes please! From berets to collared everything, this movie has helped to influence in so many ways. It can be considered one of the key reasons we have light academia core, for example.

Cruel Intentions

Another movie that sits just on the cusp of being considered 90s, is Cruel Intentions. This iconic 1990s movie stars one of my personal faves: Sarah Michelle Gellar. And her character Kathryn’s looks, did NOT disappoint. She also helped to influence aesthetics such as dark academia core with that killer checkered school uniform she wore towards the end of the movie. But her variety of simple yet elegant slip dresses, that gorgeous corset, and the dark shades that both her and Sebastian rocked, were simply epic. They could deffo be considered to help inspire later trends and aesthetics like the dark feminine aesthetic.
