I believe bags have a lot to say about a person. You can learn a lot about someone purely from the vessel they use to carry their belongings. I know I sound crazy, but stay with me here.

Some people are never seen without an oversized, slouchy tote—an endless, Mary Poppins-esque bag full of items for any and every occasion. I have a friend like this, and she’s definitely the mom of the group. Nothing says mom friend more than someone who’s almost over-prepared! Think Longchamp’s infamous Le Pliage or Balenciaga’s City bag.

Then you’ve got the people like me who refuse to accept that, while our mini bags are adorable, their impracticality can be a nuisance (enter the mom friend who can carry all our belongings in her bottomless pit). You’ll never be able to destroy the allure of the mini bag for me, though, especially not with the resurgence of Fendi’s iconic Baguette bags. With Sarah Jessica Parker as the face of the campaign, it’s the only choice, since she’s the original icon of the chaotic energy we mini-bag lovers embody.

Then you’ve got the people who refuse to commit to either extreme. Their bag isn’t so large that it could hold everything you’d need for a week’s vacation, but it also isn’t so small that you have to take your key off the ring. Think Chanel’s classic flap or a Coach Tabby. These are the friends who somehow always have exactly what they need. Organized, but not annoyingly so. Sophisticated, but still capable of making a questionable 2 a.m. decision.

Bags are a great way to personalize an outfit, especially if you have a particular go-to that just screams ‘you’!
