Balenciaga will debut its Spring/Summer 2023 collection in New York city, with a date set for May 21st. The house has revealed little else, and as of yet the venue has not been announced.

While this marks an unexpected move from the Parisian fashion house, normally opting to display collections in the French capital where it operates, it coincides with a series of efforts to restore the mobility of the luxury fashion industry to its pre-pandemic levels.

This month it was revealed that creative director at Dior Kim Jones would unveil his Spring Summer menswear collection in Los Angeles, while Chanel and Louis Vuitton had eyes firmly planted on Monaco and Southern California respectively, with details under lock and key.

The brand's recent campaign with muse Kim Kardashian, featuring the shrunken iteration of the 'Political Campaign' hoodie, 'Pantaleggings Pointy-Toe-Knife-Heel' and the pink statement 'Le Cagole' shoulder bag, shot by Stef Mitchell.

As Demna continues his ‘Balencification’ of the world through the brand’s accented, industrial aesthetic and ironic sense of humor, expectations of what the house can do next remain high. Balenciaga have relished in the unexpected, from collaborations with Kim Kardashian, Alexa Demie and even the Simpsons, to its tongue-in-cheek use of shopping and bin bags in SS22 collection ‘Clones’ and the more recent 360°.

From NFTS, a virtual clothing line with Facebook and the recent opening of an apocalyptic-looking flagship boutique in London, the brand find themselves at an all-time popularity since its revival by Nicolas Ghesquieré in 1997. French luxury group Kering bought the rights to the brand in 2001 from Spanish founder Cristóbal Balenciaga’s nephew, having inherited the brand upon his uncle’s death. Following Ghesquieré's abdication, Alexander Wang served as creative director for a short period from 2012 to 2015, before Demna's appointment that same year.

May 21st marks an important date for Demna and Co, but with its flare for reconfiguring pop culture in its own image, Balenciaga will certainly make a splash.
