Demna Gvasalia Debuts Balenciaga SS22 Collection on The Simpsons
Homer, Marge, and Smithers wear new looks.
Demna Gvasalia has been known for his eclectic experimentations since beginning his tenure as creative director at luxury fashion house Balenciaga. However, the Georgian fashion designer and Vetements co-founder has truly taken the cake with a brand-new ‘The Simpsons’ collaboration to kick off their Spring Summer collection.
The featurette follows Homer trying to find something special for Marge on her birthday, and ends up ordering her a custom Balenciaga gown - with the price tag being more than he can afford. As a result, Gvasalia and the Balenciaga crew arrive in Springfield to offer sartorial inspiration and cast the motley bunch in their Spring/Summer ready-to-wear show at Paris Fashion Week.
The ten-minute special sees Patty and Selma, Moe Sizlack, Smithers and Marge and Homer sport the collection at the show, and even receive a standing ovation from Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour. In classic ‘Simpsons’ style, loving homage is paid to the institution of the fashion industry with a few tongue-in-cheek digs here and there.
What could be bolder than showing a crowd of elite celebs and A-Listers expecting an exclusive and monotonous runway show at Paris Fashion week than showing them an episode of ‘the Simpsons.’ Many celebs turned up in eye-catching looks by the brand, including Cardi B, models Naomi Campbell and Natalia Vodianova and German photographer Juergen Teller.
“Because I’ve always loved the Simpsons,” Gvasalia said. “For its whole tongue-in-cheek nature and the slightly romantic naive side to it.” The Balenciaga front-man approached the show’s producers, not expecting a yes. “But in fact they did. They saw the blue show - the Parliament one - and liked it. Matt Groening’s been amazing.”
