Now that Covid has gotten under control (mostly) it seems the loungewear boom is in the rearview and the roaring 20s of the 21st century have finally begun. With the revival of Y2K fashion, it’s no surprise that we’re seeing a boom in 2000’s party girl fashion and the stand-out style is sheer dresses. Young brands like Fanci Club, Nensi Dojaka and Di Petsa have all produced exciting iterations of the sheer dress.
With celebrities like Florence Pugh, Chloë Bailey, Dual Lipa and Doja Cat sporting this style it’s no surprise that global shopping service, Klarna, has reported a 103% increase in purchases for sheer dresses over the past year. However, for the everyday person, it can seem a little overwhelming to walk around town bearing it all. Luckily sheer pieces are lightweight and perfect for layering, so if you aren’t quite ready to free the nip or have your neighbours see your knickers it’s okay. If you want to try a sheer dress maybe start with something that features heavy prints, like a lot of Jean Paul Gaultier’s dresses do, this helps to distort what’s underneath. Or you could start with semi-sheer dresses, London-based brand Poster Girl creates shapewear style dresses that are semi-sheer protecting your modesty whilst still showing off your body. Poster Girl has gained quite a celeb following with Kali Uchis, Sza and Lourdes Leon favouring their designs.
