But it was the boundary-pushing beauty moments - some as whimsical as the dresses, others an understated finishing touch - that hit home.
As soon as Lizzo stepped out in a 1920s-inspired finger wave mullet and baby curls to match, she set a characteristically glamorous tone for the night. Following her maximalist approach, Janelle Monáe subversively wrapped her high bun with a black cord - and while flipping off the US Supreme Court no less.
Other celebrities opted for timeless glam, like Victoria Monet with her sultry nudish-brown lip and sleekly graduated top knot, or host Taraji P. Henson, whose 45-inch ponytail was characterized by a deep side part and ultra-low placement.
