Lizzo Speaks Out Against Texas’ Anti-Trans and Anti-Abortion Laws
The Grammy Award winning artist slammed the legislation at the South by Southwest Film Festival on March 13th.
On March 13th, 2022, global superstar Lizzo delivered a speech at the South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas where she was promoting her upcoming Amazon show Watch Out For The Big Grrrls. Fuelled by the location of the event Lizzo took the opportunity to critique Texas’ anti-abortion and transphobic legislation. The singer stated, “I’m proud to rep Houston but I’m not proud to rep Texan politics right now.” This follows on from the passing of the restrictive abortion legislation in Texas last September which banned abortions as early as six weeks. Lizzo took a stand against the legislation by commenting, “The abortion ban is atrocious as well. Mind your business. Stay out of my body.”
Lizzo also took made her feelings about last month’s order to have the Texas Department of Family and Protective services investigate cases of gender-affirming as what Republican governor Greg Abbott penned “child abuse.” Lizzo advocated for those who are victims of this new restrictive legislation by highlighting that “They’re taking away the right for young children to have a chance to live authentically as themselves.” Lizzo made it clear that these discriminatory laws were unjust by blatantly stating “It’s a violation of human rights. Trans rights are human rights.”
