Biden Administration Sues Texas Over Abortion Law
The Texas abortion law was deemed ‘clearly unconstitutional’.
The department of justice has filed a lawsuit against the new abortion law that was enforced in Texas.
The justice department argued that the law which doesn’t consider incidents such as rape or incest, 'illegally interferes with federal interests', the Wall Street Journal first reported.
Attorney General Merrick Garland said at a briefing on Thursday that the law is ‘clearly unconstitutional’.
The law also known as Senate Bill 8, prohibits abortions once embryonic cardiac activity can be detected, which is roughly after six weeks. At that time most women are unaware they are pregnant.
Vice-president Kamala Harris said on Thursday that women’s freedom to make their own decisions about reproductive rights was ‘not negotiable’.
The ruling which became the most severe abortion measure in the country was supported by the Supreme Court.
With a prize of $10,000 per report private citizens are encouraged to disclose information about women who seek to have an abortion after the six weeks have passed.
Merrick Garland said that the law opened the possibility to endanger other constitutional rights by ‘bounty hunting’ private citizens, adding that the justice department would ‘protect those seeking to obtain or provide reproductive health services’, under a federal law.
