Bieberchella: Fans Left Healed or Underwhelmed?

Justin Bieber’s Coachella Headlining set divides fans

POSTED BY FRANCESCA MONTEIRO

Beliebers prove their loyalty once again through defending Justin Bieber’s Coachella performance, which some have coined as “lazy.” As his first major concert since his 2022 Justice World tour, expectations for his headlining set were sky-high – did he show up for his fans?

Justin Bieber’s Coachella appearance last weekend (April 11) was a huge jumpstart back from his four-year concert hiatus. After cancelling his 2022 Justice World Tour due to health issues, Bieber’s career instantly took a hit – until the surprise release of his SWAG album last year. With guest appearances from performers like The Kid Laroi and Tems, his set brought together a blend of his entire discography. However, critics note the lack of choreography, production and overall effort, disdainful of a show where the artist sits scrolling on YouTube in a hoodie and shorts. With festival tickets starting from US$800, fans are torn. Is the outrage justified?

Bieber’s performance reignited conversations about the different standards to which male and female artists are held in the music industry. Top artists like Beyoncé, Rihanna and Lady Gaga always famously deliver extravagant shows with high production costs and elaborate choreography. They have been subject to much criticism when their performances do not reach the calibre expected by fans. So, so we draw the line? Does Adele lack stage presence when she performs in a simple black dress? Are Harry Styles’ flamboyant props and costumes out of pocket for a male artist? While women undeniably face enormous pressures within the industry, the level of production may not solely determine what makes a ‘good’ show.

Beliebers, arguably the most die-hard fans out there, insist that this set was exactly what they were hoping for. As a child star, YouTube was one of the main platforms that propelled him to fame. A duet with the teenage Bieber’s music videos, therefore, stirred nostalgia buried deep within the crowd. Fans feel the interactive performance formed a connection with them worth more than a big, flashy show would have done, while still remaining on-brand. It offered him the chance to rebuild his relationship with music and performing, bringing listeners along as he heals.

While the set may have underwhelmed Coachella ticket-holders, this comeback was truly meaningful for many long-standing Bieber fans out there. Personally, I found the unpolished yet raw ‘Baby’ and ‘Beauty and a Beat’ renditions the highlight of the show. So what makes a concert unforgettable – is it putting on a stunning, flawless performance, or is it a reminder to fans of their original connection to the music?
