When Kate Moss Turned Pink
In celebration of the super’s birthday, let’s remember an iconic moment.
It was 1999 and model Kate Moss did something no one was waiting for. The supermodel, known as a Blondie Vixen, embraced a daring shade at the request of Donatella Versace. When the lights were on and the dance-rock music was loud at Versace's Spring/Summer 1999 show, Moss stepped out in a blue dress with neon pink hair that changed fashion forever. She then modeled a satin baby pink suit, a mini black dress, a green mini dress with golden embroideries, and a lilac gown while her pink hair made sure to catch one’s eye.
From then on — even though she only had the pink hair for a week — all anyone could talk about was Kate Moss' pink hair. The buzz surrounding her dyed new look only increased when the model was photographed in bed by Juergen Teller with her rose-colored hair spread out on the pillow. Teller called the shot "Young Pink Kate," and the image remains iconic on social media and in the fashion world to this day.
From brunette to blonde again, pink was nowhere to be seen in the years that followed. But then, in the midst of the Barbie-core era, for the Marc Jacobs Resort 2023 campaign, Moss dipped her fingertips in the sea of nostalgia and came up with pink hair while modeling the label's classic Kiki boots and two signature bags, the Bucket Pouch and a J Marc shoulder bag. The ad was sure to make an impact, with fashionistas around the world smitten by Moss' ability to recapture the cool pink aura she first exuded in 1998. Well, some people are just born with it.
