This TikTok Trend Will Transform You Into A Manga Character

TikTok is teeming with spidery lash tutorials inspired by manga.

TikTok takes a leaf out of Japanese manga to recreate a look we didn’t think could exist outside fiction. Fan or non-fan, the delectably wispy lashes on manga characters entice all the same. And now, thanks to TikTok’s sharp-wit, you, too, can sport larger-than-life flutters.

Manga lashes are surprisingly easy to achieve, with false eyelash strips singled out as the hero product. In a now-viral tutorial, Toronto-based influencer Sarah Cheung breaks down the affordable process.

Before applying mascara to her lashes, Cheung cut between five to seven pieces of a Newcally Wispy Fluffy Lash. She prepared both short and long knots – the former individually glued to her bottom lashes and the latter to her upper lashes. The result are elegantly spaced-out and spidery hairs.

Manga lashes were first spotted on Chinese social media app Xiaohongshu. As the trend spilled over TikTok, a media storm ensued (#mangalashes has now garnered 23.9 million views). Iterations of Cheung’s tutorial show even simpler methods to mimic anime eyes. Take San Franciscan Vivian Luong, for instance, who tried her hand at the trend using A-style individual lashes. Because these lashes are particularly spiky, they’re a shortcut to reproducing a doll-like eye shape. Luong went on to draw fake hairs below her water line – a hack Twiggy would have approved of.

When it comes to manga lashes, there are no right or wrong methods. TikTok users are pursuing what feels most comfortable to them. One person suggested using your hands instead of tweezers when applying the fake eyelashes.

Whichever technique you’ll be putting to the test, manga lashes are sure to add oomph to your summer makeup looks.
