Miley Cyrus Talks Hannah Montana, Divorce and Steamy Music Videos

In an interview with Howard Stern, Cyrus spares no details.

One of the many reasons we love Miley Cyrus is because she’s real as hell. She’s unashamedly herself and isn’t afraid to spill her secrets for the world to hear. This week, Miley appeared on The Howard Stern Show and discussed having sex with Dua Lipa, her marriage to Liam Hemsworth and playing Hannah Montana.

It’s been ten years since the final episode of Hannah Montana aired on TV, but those ten years have psychologically impacted Cyrus. “Some of my audience was so attached to a character, which wasn’t me” she told Stern. From the age of 11, she was faced with the difficult task of navigating who she really was as a person, whilst playing a character.

Cyrus said she began to question “am I valuable as myself? Ok, the whole show’s premise was that when I had my normal hair and looked like myself, no one gave a sh*t about me. And then when I got all dolled up and put a wig on, all of a sudden, you know, I’m being chased by people chasing my tour bus. So, that’s a lot to put on a kid - to go, ‘when you’re yourself, no one gives a f*ck’ but then when they go and kind of groom you to look like something else, something that you’re not, and you’re really young, and it’s a lot of makeup and, you know, wigs and all this stuff, it does something psychologically”.

The pressures that young women face to strive for beauty are renowned, so consuming that message from the age of 11, for ten years is crazy! Imagine being moulded into something you’re not, it would be unimaginably difficult figuring out which parts of you were real and which were fake.

Perhaps in retaliation to this character, Cyrus began experimenting with her identity: her wrecking ball phase is well documented on the Internet. Fans were left wondering if she had gone crazy, staging a publicity stunt or exploring who she was. Considering her unusual childhood, a little bit of rebellion and exploration makes total sense, and we haven’t even got into her public love story yet with Australian actor, Liam Hemsworth.

Just before the last series of Hannah Montana, Miley played Ronnie Miller in her first movie, The Last Song where she famously met and fell in love with Hemsworth. Their relationship was turbulent and her fans had to endure a whole range of emotions! In short, the couple called it quits in 2013 and rekindled their romance in 2016, got married in 2018 and got divorced in 2019. Although a short-lived marriage, Cyrus said on Twitter that she was ‘committed’ to their marriage. She told Stern “I just clung to what I had left of that house, which was me and him. And I really do and did love him very, very, very much and still do, always will”. (*hearts breaking*).

Cyrus doesn’t regret her years playing Hannah Montana either, “I’m not mad about it. I know how to lay down a wig like nobody else’s business. That I learned” she joked.

Is it fair to say that she has finally figured out who she really is? Although the thing about Cyrus is that she’s spontaneous and capable of being many different things at once (something we love!). But right now, she’s channelling the rock grunge kind of Miley and Rolling Stone called the new album “her most self-assured record yet”.

In November, Cyrus and Dua Lipa released their song ‘Prisoner’ with a racy music video. When Stern noted that “it looks like the two of you are having full-on-sex” she denied it. Although Cyrus claims that “she gives me the ‘in your dreams’. I’ve never actually had a wet dream about Dua Lipa. That’s something that she’s projecting onto me. I did not get to have sex with her, unfortunately”. However, Cyrus notes that the video is kind of “standard pop culture manipulation” to gain more views on the music video - at least she’s honest!

Cyrus has come a long way since the days of her Disney blonde wig and we’re grateful for her continual honesty and candidness in the entertainment world.
