Kylie Jenner And The Tasteless ‘Handmaid’s Tale’-Themed Party

Uh-oh Kylie.

POSTED BY PHOEBE ASKER

Over the weekend Kylie Jenner threw a birthday party, and the theme was the dystopian-TV drama The Handmaid’s Tale.

The show is based on the dystopian novel by Margaret Atwood about a possible future of the US, where a civil war has taken place and a religious cult is at large. This war effectively took away all women’s rights and The Handmaids are a group of female servants who aren’t allowed to read or write and are constantly sexually assaulted, impregnated and forced to give birth for wealthy families.

With the US being at the center of controversy surrounding women’s rights currently, we can’t help but think that this parties theme was a little tone-deaf. Using quotes from the show in less-than-modest ways Jenner offered cocktails with names like “Under His Eye Tequila” and “Praise-be Vodka”.

On Instagram, someone commented “What Kylie is doing here demolish the point of the show, by reducing it to just a show, when what it really is, is a collection of human suffering. To see someone so privileged make light of those who are fighting to stay alive every single [day] is disheartening and equally disgusting.”

More online opinions:

In 2018 a company was forced to remove a “Sexy Handmaid” Halloween costume after a large number of people complained. Margaret Attwood wrote the uniform of the handmaid’s to strip the women of their identities and symbolize a society where women have been ripped from their freedom, yet when Kylie Jenner has this party she moves the cloak to show a skin-tight dress and fishnets.

With the premiere coinciding with Trump's election in 2016, the US has gone through political changes that are taking them step by step closer to the ‘fictional’ Gilead.

What was your reaction to the party? Do you think it was tone-deaf or an honest mistake?
