Experts Only Music Festival Brings New York Fashion To Randall’s Island
Flower crowns are out, scarves are in.
Over the past weekend, DJ John Summit hosted his inaugural Experts Only Music Festival in New York City on Randall’s Island. The 31-year-old DJ brought in big crowds to the NYC venue and with it came the ultimate display of New York City fashion. The EDM concert set a new
standard for festival fashion going forward, with plenty of looks for us to pick apart.
Chainmail tops and waist beads, two popular music festival staples, are alive and well, as are crop tops and daisy dukes. But unlike the looks that come out of Coachella Valley every year, there was less fringe and definitely no flower crowns. Here is a breakdown of the best trends featured at the Experts Only Music Festival and how to recreate them for other music festivals in the future:
Sheer
You couldn’t turn your head without seeing sheer clothing. And these sheer pieces definitely turned heads. This bold and confident look is usually achieved through kimonos and silk skirts, as was the case at Experts Only. The sheer pieces could be nude or brightly-colored, paired with chainmail or left bare. The underwear as outwear trend is helpful here, as the see-through skirts often showed off thongs and bras or, at times, no underwear at all.
All-black
While there was the occasional pop of color moving through the crowd, for the most part, the dress code was all-black, matching the urban, industrial landscape. It set a strong tone for the day, creating a serious, grunge-look. Black pleather shorts were one of the main ways that people wore black, with hints of black pleather visible all throughout the concert.
Knitted tops
If you’re interested in a more modest look, knitted, off-the-shoulder tops over bras and crop tops are the way to go. They cover much of your skin, while still being revealing. The knitted tops were perfect for showing off tattoos and piercings if you want.
Co-ords
Influencers and– let’s be honest– wannabe influencers, were dressed head to toe in either denim or sequin co-ords. Denim was a major part of the fashion, being cool and comfortable. People waded through the crowd, in matching head-to-toe denim outfits, like loose fitting jeans
and crop tops, or sequins that easily catch the eye.
Body suits
For a sexy, youthful look there were body suits, mostly involving cut-outs. Showing some skin was not a problem over the weekend. The body suits allowed people to move freely when dancing, while creating a wild and fun aesthetic.
Male Jewelry
There were more than just a few specks of gold and silver in the crowd. Men embracing the male jewelry trend could be seen all throughout the festival in the form of piercings, bracelets,
rings, and gold chains. Men everywhere had a chance to show off their esoteric style, ranging from just a few pieces to layers of jewelry.
Footwear
For footwear everyone wore boots and sneakers. Combat boots remain a popular choice, serving as one of the best options for jumping up and down and waiting in long lines. Nowhere did you see open-toed sandals or high heels.
Pashminas
The most surprising fashion statement of the day was the pashminas. Everywhere you looked, attendees were wrapped in long scarves. The pashminas went from stylish to practical as the temperature dropped and doubled as props for dancing. When they were not being used, they were worn as head scarves and hip sashes or just as regular pashminas wrapped around their necks. Above all else, the music festival showcased everybody’s unapologetic style. No matter what they were wearing, people everywhere were having a good time in a judgment-free zone. This year’s festival was a feast for the senses, giving us plenty to chew on as we wait with bated
breath to see how concert-goers dress at next year’s Experts Only concert.
