A makeup base, or primer, is an essential part of modern makeup, preparing the skin and extending the longevity of cosmetics. It creates a smooth surface, conceals imperfections, and improves the application of the foundation.

The Key Functions of Primer

The primary function of a primer is to even out skin texture and enhance the durability of makeup. It fills in pores, smooths fine lines, and acts as a barrier between the skin and cosmetics, preventing the foundation from being absorbed and oxidized. Additionally, some primers offer extra benefits such as hydration, mattifying effects, or color correction.

How to Apply Primer Correctly

Primer should be applied to cleansed and moisturized skin after using a day cream. A small amount of the product is evenly distributed across the face, with special attention to areas with enlarged pores or uneven texture. After applying the primer, it is recommended to wait a few minutes for it to absorb before proceeding with foundation or other makeup products.

Types of Primers and Their Benefits

There are several types of primers, each designed to address specific concerns.

  • Mattifying primers are ideal for oily and combination skin, controlling sebum production and preventing shine.
  • Hydrating primers work best for dry and dehydrated skin, providing extra moisture and preventing flakiness.
  • Color-correcting primers come in different shades to neutralize various skin concerns—green reduces redness, purple counteracts sallowness, and peach brightens dull skin.
  • Illuminating primers contain light-reflecting particles that give the skin a healthy glow and minimize signs of fatigue.

Choosing the Right Primer for Your Skin Type

When choosing a primer, it is essential to consider your skin type.

  • Oily skin - Opt for lightweight mattifying primers that regulate oil production and reduce shine.
  • Dry skin – Hydrating primers with a creamy or gel consistency help retain moisture.
  • Combination skin – A mix of products may be needed, such as a mattifying primer for the T-zone and a hydrating primer for dry areas.
  • Sensitive skin – Hypoallergenic primers free from fragrances and harsh ingredients, preferably water-based, are the best choice.

Enhancing Your Makeup with the Right Base

A well-chosen makeup base can significantly enhance the look and longevity of makeup, providing additional skincare benefits and protection throughout the day.
