Seeing Double At Gucci's Twinsburg SS23 Show

Reflection of Milan Fashion Week S/S 2023.

Following a subdued London Fashion Week S/S 2023 in the wake of the death of Queen Elizabeth II, it's nearly two weeks on since the world turned its gaze to Milan as its most profound luxury labels and fashion houses exposed their vision for Spring-Summer 2023. From Moschino kiddie-pool-couture to a mouth-watering 20 minute long video of Kim Kardashian devouring a bowl of pasta at Dolce & Gabbanas runway show, this year it was Gucci twin-cept which stole the show.

Gucci’s creative director Alessandro Michele is profound for his elaborate and intricate storytelling of fashion campaigns. A legacy he did not fail to live up to during Gucci's recent MFW runway show - Gucci Twinsburg. Inspired by the intimate twinship of his mother, Eralda, and her twin sister, Giuliana, Michele played tribute to their relationship through one of the most personal fashion shows to date.

With a fascination for asymmetrical reciprocity, Michele orchestrated the Italian fashion house's latest S/S collection across two runways divided by a partition, each a reflection of the other. The shows ran simultaneously against one another, Unbeknown to the audience the partition would soon be lifted to reveal 68 identical sets of twins to join hands for the commencement of the show.

In his notes for the show, Michele wrote, “As if by magic, clothes duplicate. They seem to lose their status of singularity. The effect is alienating and ambiguous. Almost a rift in the idea of identity, and then, the revelation: the same clothes emanate different qualities on seemingly identical bodies. Fashion, after all, lives on serial multiplications that don’t hamper the most genuine expression of every possible individuality.”

Seen backstage, Thomas de Kluyver, Global Makeup Artist for Gucci, explained how the makeup at Gucci Twinsburg was defined by light. Inspired by the show’s energy, the looks created were described as ‘timeless’.

The collection itself heavily referenced the animal kingdom, commenting on how biology played a major role in the creation of twins. Vibrant floral prints, animal imagery and even an unexpected collaboration with franchise ‘Gremlins’. Michele replaced this season's “Gucci Gang” with Gucci Gremlin.
