Moschino’s Summer 2023 Collection Pays Tribute to Tony Viramontes

Moschino reminds the world of the talents of a gone-but-not-forgotten icon.

POSTED BY RAQUEL GODDARD

Moschino’s Summer 2023 collection pays homage to fashion designer, Tony Viramontes, a gone-too-soon, Mexican-American fashion designer who died of an AIDS-related illness in 1988 at the age of 31. The collection utilizes the brand’s signature pop of color, giving menswear a flare that it has often been deprived of, while maintaining the energy and vivacity of the 80s that Viramontes’ work helped create.

Jeremey Scott, the creative director of Men’s Fashion Week Milan, collaborated with the estate of Viramontes in order to create a collection that truly expressed his creative genius. Scott stated that he “wanted to shine a light on this creator,” because, “he might not have been a household name, but he was a force.”

The heavily patterned and color-blocked clothing line incorporates Viramontes-esque faces and line drawings. Appropriately, the more specific looks from the collection came from Viramontes’ contributions to The Face and the Buffalo styling movement of the 80s. For an electrifying look the collection used brightly-colored lines, bringing seriousness and silliness to the well-structured outfits.

With sportcoats, boots, topcoats, suits, and blazers, shorts, pleated skirts, and pants, the collection manages to cover all of the bases in terms of year-round wear. Oftentimes using shiny, metallic colors, the outfits balance the soft Moschino silhouette with a statement-making vibrancy.

No one who sees this collection will doubt that this was a labor of love, brought on by recognizing the genius of another artist. The collection, much like the artist who inspired it, is a force to be reckoned with.
