5 Simple Steps To Frizz-Free Hair
You’ll wish you had done this sooner.
Are you fed up with frizz ruining every hairstyle? It’s time to take control. With warmer weather and increased humidity approaching, you must complete these 5 steps to keep your locks healthy, protected, and frizz-free.
1. Wash Your Hair Correctly
Hair washing is straightforward, but selecting the right shampoo and conditioner requires some thought. To make the best choice, it's important to consider your hair type. If you’re prone to frizz, you likely have naturally curly or textured hair. Unlike in straight hair, the structure and shape of curly follicles make it harder for natural oils to support the hair as it should, resulting in a dryness that is vulnerable to frizz.
When searching for the right shampoo and conditioner, look for products specifically formulated to combat dry hair. If you want to get more technical, check the ingredients listed on the bottles — you’re ideally looking for natural oils (including argan, jojoba, and coconut oil), hyaluronic acid, shea butter, and aloe vera.
For extra softness, you can additionally use a leave-in conditioner that will lock in moisture.
2. Use a Microfibre Towel
It’s no secret that air drying your hair prevents heat damage; however, it doesn’t stop frizz. It may sound like the better option, but air-dried hair can become very dry. Then you’re faced with the decision of whether to brush your hair — the battle of knotty curls vs frizzy mess.
The best way to dry your hair naturally is with a microfibre towel. This towel made of tiny fabrics is extremely soft and highly absorbent. They are proven to reduce breakage and eliminate the friction you experience when drying with a cotton towel. They’re also great at maintaining your curl pattern.
As soon as you’re out of the shower, squeeze your hair to remove excess water and then wrap it in a microfibre towel. You can let it dry like this or, if you have thicker hair or little time, you can speed up the process with a hairdryer.
3. Prevent and Protect
It’s okay to use heat on your hair as long as you do so safely. Before drying or styling hair with heated tools, you must apply an effective heat protectant. This will reduce heat damage and protect your hair from breakage. You can buy special protectants that have smoothing qualities to prevent frizz.
Top tip: When blow-drying your hair use a low heat setting. For a sleek, straight hairstyle, attach a concentrator nozzle to your hairdryer and point downwards as you dry. For a curly hairstyle, attach a diffuser nozzle, place it at the ends of your curls, and blow upwards.
4. Apply Hair Oils
A good hair oil is a bottled miracle. Whether you use it for a quick fix or lasting goodness, it effortlessly tames frizzy hair, leaving it smooth and soft. Apply oil after styling to lock in moisture and achieve a sleek and shiny finish. Alternatively, apply oil before bed and let it work its magic overnight.
Avoid hair products containing silicones. They may work at first, but prolonged use prevents hair follicles from absorbing essential moisture from nourishing hair products, resulting in dehydration.
5. Invest in a Satin Pillowcase
Sleeping on a satin pillowcase has many benefits including reducing wrinkles and acne, but we’re most interested in its qualities that result in healthier and stronger hair. Unlike a cotton pillowcase, satin doesn’t tug the hair while you sleep. Instead, the hair smoothly glides across the surface. Satin pillowcases reduce hair loss, knots, and frizz. You'll be pleasantly surprised with effects of this product.
Top tip: It’s worth buying an expensive pillowcase made of real satin, otherwise you won’t receive the benefits.
If you’ve got curls that are more difficult to maintain overnight, try using a satin hair bonnet. This is more likely to keep your hair in place and reduce frizz as you sleep.
