Jo Malone Wild Bluebell Cologne
This perfume is the signature daytime scent of Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle herself—and what screams ‘richness’ if not royalty? With top notes of bluebell, a heart of persimon and a base of musk and white amber, this scent is as much floral as it is watery and fresh. If you like strong scents, this one is definitely not for you. It’s not groundbreaking by any means, but it offers something I believe is one of the most telling things when trying to see if someone is truly rich—it smells like you’re not wearing anything. It’s the ‘no makeup look’ of the perfume world. It’s subtle from the get-go, and only gets fainter as the day goes by, but it still doesn’t fully disappear. By the end of the day, you are left smelling fresh and clean, like your body has never felt the touch of dust, dirt or sweat. Neither strong nor unique, this perfume is the epitome of old money—it doesn’t shout, it whispers!
If your vibe is straightforward and clean, you can get this scent from the official Jo Malone website for $144.
Maison Francis Kurdjian Paris, Baccarat Rouge 540
I couldn’t not include ‘the talk of Tik-Tok’, the famous Baccarat Rouge. If you want to smell expensive, this perfume is certainly going to do it for you. As much as I would absolutely love to hate it because of its pearl-gripping price, I have to accept that, fortunately or unfortunately, it is worth every cent. Its smell is hard to pinpoint—you can look at the ingredients, of course, and you’ll see that it has notes of jasmine, saffron and freshly-cut cedar, so you’ll find that it’s neither fully floral nor truly woody. This brilliant mix of scents makes it all the more enticing because of the mystery it creates around you—are you a rich debutante? An old-money heiress or a self-made CEO? This perfume is perfect for any of these and so much more. And even though the price intimidates even the most avid perfume collector, it’s one of the most long-lasting perfumes I have ever tried, which is why you could get away with buying a smaller amount—even after you shower, you can still faintly smell ‘the ghost of perfume past’ on you!
You can find it on the official Francis Kurdjian Paris website for €215 for 2.4 fl.oz. or €425 for 6.8 fl.oz.
Byredo Gipsy Water
Model and founder of Rose Inc. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s favorite scent, this perfume is one of the most popular ones among the contemporary ‘bourgeoisie’. While the name is questionable at best (hopefully they change it soon), the scent is one of the most hauntingly beautiful ones out there. With top notes of bergamot, juniper berries, lemon and pepper, and a heart of pine needle and gorgeous incense, this perfume is perfect for men and women alike. Although all perfumes change after sitting on the skin for a while, this one only seems to get better. When I wear it, it turns sweeter, slightly more feminine and the base notes of vanilla raise to the surface, while on my boyfriend it starts to smell more and more of sandalwood. We could both be wearing it and smell completely different, but equally enticing. If you want to smell rich, what better way to do it than have a scent that is entirely different from anyone else’s?
