Balenciaga has recently faced a great deal of controversy for their “Gift Shop” campaign, which featured children holding toys decorated with BDSM gear. The campaign was accused of promoting child abuse, with celebrities such as Alexa Demie cutting ties with the brand and other brands such as Adidas canceling collaborations.

Balenciaga has issued and official apology, and their first step towards improvement is a three-year partnership with the National Children’s Alliance (NCA). According Balenciaga’s Instagram post, the program will focus on three pillars: supporting the NCA’s Mental Health Institute in helping children heal from trauma through cognitive behavioral training, providing education for Balenciaga about child protection, and raising public awareness on child abuse and child protection. The brand’s support is set to enable NCA to train nearly 2,000 professionals specialized in child abuse and help up to 55,000 children. This partnership is certainly a step in the right direction for Balenciaga, but is it enough to make up for their harmful campaign?
