While Florals For Spring Might Not Be Groundbreaking

They certainly are timeless.

All the fashion girlies yearn for the approval of the iconic Miranda Priestley (as played by Meryl Streep in the cult classic ‘The Devil Wears Prada’), but I’m going to go out on a limb and disagree with one of her most iconic lines (Miranda please forgive me). She famously drawls, “florals for spring? Groundbreaking.” The hilarious, deadpan delivery cemented the line in the minds of young aspiring fashionistas everywhere.

While florals in spring may be completely unoriginal, hence Miranda’s sarcastic response to its suggestion, this is due to the undeniable domination floral prints have over spring fashion. Being completely honest, I’m so here for it.

Each spring florals are reimagined on the runway, and this season has been no different. Dior played it safe with a feminine, minimalistic approach. The ivory color palette and delicate lace pieces gave their looks a very bridal feel. Miu Miu also used florals as a symbol of femininity, but in contrast to Dior’s traditional approach, florals acted as a hyper-feminine juxtaposition to workwear silhouettes.

Off the runway, florals also appear across several online trends. From graphics and appliqués to lace and ballet-core, florals transcend individual style, constantly adapting and changing to fit what is currently trending.

The versatility of florals allows the print to be reimagined year after year and runway after runway. This versatility certainly serves the longevity of florals in fashion, cementing the print as a fail-safe we return to every year.
