Whimsical Fashion Is Whimsy... Who Is It For?

Who is whimsical fashion intended for & who wears it.

POSTED BY SHANIA BLAKE

Whimsical fashion is intended for silly girls. Whimsical fashion is for people who like stripes on their tights & not just a plain type. Of course, there’s different types of whimsical fashion, and we’ll be breaking apart some of those types. My oldest memory with whimsical music is Stevie Nicks, and her ability to showcase that in her outfits, especially the song “Dreams”. Another artist who makes somewhat whimsical music is Kate Bush. Whimsical fashion was an era that was very popular in the '90s, with films like The Craft coming out in 1996.

Helena Bonham Carter

Helena Bonham Carter is best known for her roles in Tim Burton films and the Harry Potter films as Bellatrix Lestrange. She’s lauded for her way of throwing outfits together, which comes across as ‘quirky.’

Whimsical fashion is about tying different elements together in clothes and being able to express your personality through them. Whimsical fashion is for people who like to wear florals and flares. It’s a genre of fashion that carries a lot of connotations. It’s the masterful mixing of prints and patterns, known for adding a sense of playfulness to your outfit.

Kate Bush

Especially, in this outfit of Kate Bush, you can see she’s been playful with the colors in it. There’s so many fabrics being used, and to be honest, it’s what the trademark is in fashion, in being able to see someone in a specific outfit. It’s an outfit, you would think she would wear & create. Also, her makeup palette even hints at that whimsy feel to it, of dressing up like she’s some kind of magician or witch.

Stevie Nicks & Kate Bush

Both Stevie Nicks & Kate Bush, more so, align with Whimsigoth, and the idea of mixing whimsical and goth together. The main theme of whimsical is being able to mix darker colors with lighter ones, and shown in Stevie’s outfit, the black cascading gown top & the skirt that is a show on its own, with different things happening on it. Something that is even shown in this outfit, is how eccentric whimsical fashion can be. It’s pretty out of the box.

Lisa Bonet

Lisa Bonet is also similar to both Stevie Nicks & Kate Bush, in the themes of dressing up like a witch, and also somewhat boho-chic. She is known for being the epitome of what boho chic is, back in the '90s, and her fashion choices.

Whimsical fashion is also shown, not in just celeb fashion, but film. Luna Lovegood, from Harry Potter.

Luna Lovegood

Luna Lovegood is someone who is the prototype when dreaming of whimsical fashion and what it looks like. She’s good with animals, reading books, and her quirky outfits. Luna’s whimsical pairings and her funky glasses,& how her house looks.

Coraline

Another film is Coraline, which showcases a lot of whimsical themes, of buttons, and being in a fantasy world, something that Alice In Wonderland can also relate to. Whimsical is, can be associated with dreams & the idea of reading fictional books, because it's the idea of escape.

Penelope

Penelope is a film filled with outrageous stripes and vibrant colors, like Penelope’s purple outfit. It centers Mila Kunis, and James McAvoy. Penelope’s signature outfit is a purple coat, tied with green tights, and green shoes, and a somewhat beehive kind of design scarf, which covers her snout.

The Craft

Last but not least The Craft (1996), the people who are “the weirdos”. The mix of like Whimsical and Whimsigoth, and also just goth. Teenage witches who say that, just by the outfits they put together, and indulging in dark magic.

Whimiscal fashion is still a trend that continues to live on, even if it's not showcased in trends, & in conversations.
