Models That Reinvented The SS22 Runway
As the spring/summer 2022 fashion weeks come to a close, get your scoop on the stars of the show(s).
After a brief pause on in-person fashion shows due to safety precautions throughout the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, a plethora of designers have once again returned to hosting catwalk shows for the Spring/Summer 2022 fashion weeks. From Versace’s bold and bright collection to Chanel’s 90s nostalgia, the Spring/Summer 2022 fashion weeks were met with excitement and anticipation after the cancellation of in-person catwalks for the last three fashion seasons.
Whether you were in New York, London, Milan or Paris, many familiar faces stole the show. Household names like Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss and Emily Ratajkowski made appearances in celebration of the return, but there were a few models who reinvented the runway this season.
From inclusivity to representation, these models were here to advocate for their stance on catwalks’ long-standing use of exclusivity — and weren’t taking shit from anyone these past few weeks, especially Gigi Hadid.
The model, whose fashion weeks were packed with a total of seven shows, returned to the runway after her brief hiatus to give birth to and spend time with her daughter, and she received body-shaming comments about her physique. (Yes, really.)
Hadid said, “I represent a body type that wasn’t accepted in high-fashion before, and I’m very lucky to be supported by the designers, stylists and editors. It doesn’t matter if people are saying you’re anorexic or too far. It’s just that people are bullies. I think that a lot of people are scared to comment on the industry that they’re in and they feel like they’re not allowed to have a voice.”
Gigi Hadid wasn’t the only familiar face. Dua Lipa, the pop icon and former model, also turned heads with her debut at the Versace show in Milan and quickly became a fan-favorite guest.
Lipa, who opened the show to a remix of her song, “Physical,” and then closed it by hugging Donatella Versace in a pink metal two-piece, said, “It has been such an incredible experience to continue my journey with my Versace family from starring in a campaign to now opening the SS22 show.” How much more iconic can it get?
Another model who has been reinventing the runway since Versace’s Spring 2021 show is Precious Lee, and according to her Instagram bio, she's in the business of making history. Lee, who has grown up always wanting to be a high-fashion model, has become one of the most recognizable names working the runway of the Spring/Summer 2022 shows. After becoming the first plus-size Black woman on the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit, Lee has made strides to redefine what fashion looks like in an industry that’s centered on extreme thinness.
