The Met Gala Didn’t Do “Pretty” This Year

It did art you had to decode

POSTED BY ZOE TYLER

This year’s Met Gala wasn’t about looking good. It was about making people pause, squint, and ask what they were even looking at.

“Fashion Is Art” pushed everyone into concept mode, and the ones who won didn’t play it safe. They treated their bodies like canvases, sculptures, sometimes even unfinished work. Think anatomy references, surreal silhouettes, pieces that felt pulled straight out of a museum and dropped onto a red carpet.

The Ones Who Understood the Assignment

Some looks didn’t just reference art. They became it.

Naomi Osaka showed up like a fractured painting, layered and emotional. Taylor Swift leaned into movement with fringe that echoed performance art. Beyoncé went full anatomical fantasy, literally turning the human body into couture.

Then there were the hyper-literal moments that somehow still worked. Kendall Jenner channeling classical sculpture. Gracie Abrams stepping straight out of a Klimt painting. Hunter Schafer and others pulling direct references from art history without making it feel like cosplay.

And Rihanna, of course, arriving late like she always does, wrapped in sculptural metal that felt somewhere between armor and installation piece.

The Chaos Was the Point

What made this year hit is that it wasn’t cohesive. It wasn’t supposed to be.

Some people went soft and painterly. Others went aggressive and body-focused. Some looked like walking sculptures. Others looked like they got lost in an art school fever dream and came back changed.

Even the more chaotic looks, the ones that felt messy or too much, still added to the overall energy. Because the theme didn’t reward perfection. It rewarded perspective.

Fashion Finally Let Itself Be Weird Again

And honestly, that’s why it worked.

For a while, the Met started drifting into “expensive but predictable.” This snapped it back. Suddenly, fashion felt risky again. A little uncomfortable. A little conceptual.

Not everything landed. Some looks missed completely. But the ones that did? They didn’t just dress up.

They said something.
