Naomi Osaka is out of the US Open. The 21-year-old has inspired millions not just through her tennis, but through her acts of kindness both on and off the court, her effortless style and her relatability. Mostly, she just keeps making us cry… happy tears over the weekend, as she consoled her opponent, 15-year-old Coco Gauff; and now, sad ones, as we wave the tennis star out of the championship. It is no surprise the crowd-favorite was Nike’s choice to premier the much-anticipated NikeCourt x sacai Collab.

Osaka’s generosity-of-spirit was out in full force on Saturday, after defeating Coco in two straight sets. Coco was understandably distraught at leaving the tournament in the third round when Osaka came over to console her, asking, “Do you want to do the interview with me… These people are here for you…No, you’re good! Look, you’re amazing, seriously…No, I think it’s better than going into the shower and crying. We have to let these people know how you feel.” Osaka reaching out to Coco in this way was a beautiful expression of women championing one another, and the beauty of raw emotion. It was all so relatable! It was especially moving to see such a display of genuine concern and affection, in a field where things can so easily get nasty, and often do. Ahem... Kyrgios.

Not only is she kind, mature and sophisticated, but Osaka clearly has an eye for style. At this year’s tournament, the Japanese player sported the latest NikeCourt x sacai collection as her uniform. The collaboration was so fitting because sacai, a Japanese luxury brand, is heralded as a pathway brand between casual and formal styles; fundamentally experimentational, yet not unrelatable. The doubled skirt and bodysuit are the perfect example of very two modern silhouettes from the collaborative collection; the two-piece appears to be a classic tennis dress from afar, but up close, the apparel shows its diversity. Cool, modern, unpredictable; just like the girl wearing it.

As the last Grand Slam in the tennis calendar year, the US Open is a real melting-pot of vibrant fashion, animated tennis and often, drama. This year, Naomi Osaka showed us firsthand, how cool it is to be kind.
