The Peoples Met Gala: The Debt Gala
The second annual Debt Gala happened and it was so camp!
One year ago Molly Gabe was watching the Met Gala with friends and decided the event looked fun, but the price point makes it a closed event to anyone who is not of high status. But that didn't feel like an unreachable barrier to someone who is in the arts where beautiful things are made on a tight budget by people who are on an equally tight budget.
From this idea, the Debt Gala was born. This year, a fashion party that raises money for Debt charities, the funds went to Dollar For and Debt Collective. With tickets costing only $35 it's a great way for the average fashion-forward person to give back.
This year they parodied the Met Gala collection name by having the theme Sleeping Baddies: Slumber Party. This resulted in lots of people showing up in their most stylish pj's.
Naturally, the event is overwhelmingly queer, attracting people from all across the community but especially drag queens. The artistic nature of the event is a perfect fit for all queens.
They had a spokesman for the Debt Collective, Braxton Brewington, speak during the event who summed up the goal of the event perfectly:
We believe we can fight back against creditors,
We like to quote from Jean Paul Getty, a very famous capitalist. And he says: ‘If you owe the bank $100, that’s your problem. If you owe the bank $100 million, that’s the bank’s problem.’
