Mean Girls 2024 Remake: Costume Controversy
Did Regina George's style miss the mark?
Mean Girls is a movie that never goes out of style, so it excited everyone when it was revealed that there would be a remake based on the Broadway musical. The 2024 version of the classic flick was anticipated to be even more exciting than the original. So what has the internet in a frenzy?
One word - costumes. Costume designer Tom Broecker faced the challenge of taking a beloved classic of early-'00s cinema, full of memorable looks and catering it to a new generation. A task not many people could pull off. This adaptation of Mean Girls is its own Gen Z thing, with a lot of gender fluidity, athleisure, vintage and secondhand thrifting.
The fashion in cinema can either make or break characters and in this case, to some, it may be seen as a flop rather than a slay. This is because many have complained that the looks didn't hit the same as they thought they would. The style will be memorable in years to come as what we wore during this fashion era, yet for the three boujee babes, Regina, Karen, and Gretchen; there needed to be more designer fashion brands that the IT girls would wear. Where are the Louis Vuitton, Prada, and Miu Miu pieces? Yes, it's not very realistic regarding the price range, but it's a movie - it's fake.
If you ask me for my opinion, Regina George's outfits are the biggest issue. This iconic character has to have garments that are fitting to who she is- the character we know and love is a girly girl with a bitchy personality; she most certainly would not be seen dead in combat boots. I completely understand it's a modern take on old-school legacy; therefore, aspects will differ. Still, in this case, the costume department made the main character look like a wallflower, and her co-stars had a better style, which would never happen to a Queen bee.
So what do you think? Was it a hit or a miss, and for those of you who have yet to see the movie, it's streaming at a local cinema near you, watch and decide!
