Yes, You Heard That Right. The Devil Wears Prada Is Officially A Musical

A musical in Chicago? Groundbreaking.

POSTED BY CLAUDIA STEWART

I’m sure you’ve all seen the 2006 hit movie The Devil Wears Prada, based on the novel with the same title, about aspiring journalist Andy Sachs and the torment she faces as Miranda Priestly’s wrath at Runway magazine. Since you all probably loved the movie and re-watch it at least once a year (don’t lie, I do too), you’ll be pleased to know that it’s now a musical

Recently, the cast and crew of The Devil Wears Prada musical started to reveal information about the long-awaited production. According to the show’s official website, the music was produced by none other than Elton John, with lyrics by composer Shaina Taub. Along with adding music, the production will be more inclusive than the early aughts motion picture. The character of Andy Sachs was initially played by Anne Hathaway, while the musical will feature up-and-coming triple-threat Taylor Iman Jones. In addition, Tony Award-winning actress Beth Leavel will play the feisty Miranda Priestly (originally played by Meryl Streep).

The Devil Wears Prada isn’t the first cult favorite to become a Broadway play; Mean Girls, the 2004 classic by Tina Fey, hit Broadway in 2017 and continued through 2020. While the Mean Girls musical has been performed throughout the country, The Devil Wears Prada will only perform shows in Chicago. So even though New York City is the Broadway capital, Chicago is a close second. For those who can’t make the trip to see the production in person, The Devil Wears Prada will have a worldwide premiere in Chicago and online during the evening of July 19th, with in-person shows continuing through August 21st.
