The Autumn/Winter 2024 fashion week in Shanghai, China, kicked off on March 25th, and we’ve already been exposed to an abundance of innovative and distinct designs. Titled “Chainborne,” Shanghai FW has a heavy emphasis on emerging topics in the fashion industry and consists of a variety of collection launches and runway shows, trade orders, forums, and exhibitions.

Apparel brands like MERRYCHENG, Xiao Li Studio, LINGHE, and J Rureminds have used Shanghai FW as the platform to launch their innovative collections including deconstructed textiles, metallics, cut-outs, and unconventional silhouettes. One of the standout shows so far, however, is Selkie’s AW2024 collection.

Characterized as “fanciful, nostalgic, and extra romantic,” Selkie is a ready-to-wear apparel brand that merges the worlds of haute couture and affordable fashion. The brand has a focus on sustainable and long-lasting apparel, and for each collection they produce small inventories and pre-sale launches to keep their waste low.

Through a love of folklore, the founder Kimberly Gordon ensures that each collection tells a story. Inspiring the name of the brand, the Selkie is a woman of the ocean who lives inside seal skin, which originates from Irish, Scottish, Icelandic, and Scandinavian tales. With this foundation in mind, it’s no surprise that each one of Selkie’s drops offers a look into a dreamy fantasy world.

For her Autumn/Winter 2024 collection, Gordon chose to maintain her romantic aesthetic with hints of cottagecore to create a tranquil and feminine line. In true Little Bo Peep fashion, the collection featured bows, gingham, lace, and corsets. The silhouettes were bold, incorporating puff sleeves, ruffles, crinoline hoop skirts, and an abundance of layering, creating the kind of effect you’d expect from the wardrobe designer of Little Women.

Accessories in the collection maintained the old-timey aesthetic, with lace umbrellas, bonnets, hair ribbons, and knee-high socks. Contrasting from the traditional shades of Fall/Winter, the colorways blended the worlds of light and dark. Dark shades of black, purple, brown, and green were balanced with bright pops of baby pinks and blues.

The goal of the Autumn/Winter line was to encourage artistic expression, and it did exactly that, maintaining Selkie’s image of dreamy wanderlust.
