For me, International Women's Day is important because inequality, discrimination, and sexualization towards women are still prevalent and need to be highlighted! On this day, my thoughts are also with all the women in other countries who are still denied the right to education, property, or suffrage.
When I think about the fact that until a few years ago, women couldn't even vote, drive alone, or open a bank account, a lot has changed, but firstly, it's too late, and secondly, there is still not complete equality between men and women. For example, despite equal working hours, women still receive significantly lower wages!
Unfortunately, inequality, discrimination, and sexualization towards women are still present in the music industry! I have often felt that I was underestimated and had fewer opportunities because of my gender. Through my success as an artist, I want to contribute to more balance in the music industry. I want to encourage more women not to be discouraged and to hold on to their dreams.
A significant part of my team consists of women, and it makes me very happy to see more women in leadership positions! However, I also wish that women would support each other more and face each other with less hatred and envy.
GRIFF
Hey girls. Happy #internationalwomensday! Since I entered the music world at around 16, I've gotten used to walking into meetings and studios, and every time, there's a guy at the desk. Girls, keep going! Hopefully, one day, it won't be so rare for people to hear that I'm a girl who can produce 100% of my songs. Thanks to every guy who has empowered me as a woman in music too xx.
BECKY HILL
Happy International Women's Day!! Here's to all the women who are absolutely killing it and making a name for themselves in all industries. Let's keep filling the spaces and empowering each other to be our best.
TARAH WHO?
Some progress has been made. There is more visibility for women who play, thanks to social media. Whether you're a band promoting or an audience member sharing, the word is out there. Record labels are not as essential anymore. Maybe the younger generation of musicians has not been exposed to as much sexism. As for wages, as an independent band, we get paid for the merchandise we sell. But sometimes, I wonder if being a woman in charge of the band affects some treatments.
LIA from THE MYSTERINES
Hi, it’s Lia from The Mysterines. On this International Women's Day, I would like to say that the greatest weapon a woman can have is the truth. Don’t be afraid to use it, especially when you’re silenced.
