Emily Ratajkowski Condemns Netflix's "Blonde" For Fetishizing Female Pain
The backlash of the film only seems to grow by the day.
It seems as though the highly anticipated Netflix film Blonde starring Ana de Armas as the legendary Marilyn Monroe, is now one of the most divisive films in recent memory because of its polarizing reaction from critics and fans alike. On the one hand, the film has been praised for Ana de Armas’ captivating performance (garnering her a 14-minute standing ovation at the Venice film festival) and its mesmerizing art direction. Still, on the other hand, it is being hammered by criticisms because of the dark, bleak portrayal of Marilyn Monroe and the fact that many of the scenes in the film are fictionalized or fabricated.
Supermodel Emily Ratajkowski went on TikTok earlier this week to express her disdain for the film because it is yet another example of the fetishization of female pain. In the video, Ratajkowski states: “I’m not surprised to hear that it is yet another movie fetishizing female pain, even in death. We love to fetishize people in pain; look at Amy Winehouse, at Britney Spears, and at how we obsess over Diana’s death.”

Ratajkowski continues in her TikTok video by explaining how she knows she will be “pissed off” if she even attempts to watch Blonde. However, the 31-year-old urged her viewers to try instead fetishizing their anger for underrepresented voices to be heard and for women to be taken seriously in Hollywood and storytelling finally.
As stated previously, this is one of many harsh critiques of the film that have come out recently, another being from Courtney Stodden, who is a longtime Marilyn Monroe fan and voiced her disapproval of the film by stating, “I would urge people not to watch the movie because that is not Marilyn Monroe, that is not her story. It’s fictionalized, and it’s to make her something she wasn’t.” She is even urging people to boycott the film for its harmful portrayal of Monroe.
As of right now, no one from the film has spoken on any of the critiques, and neither has Netflix.
