Dior's Pre-Fall 2022 Collection Is A Celebration Of Women

The collection showcases strength in unity.

Dior Women’s Pre-Fall 2022 collection is exploring femininity and celebrating influential women in a brand new look — and all thanks to creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri.

“Dior once said that femininity is a trap,” Chiuri said. “So, in my five years here, I have tried to tease out that the idea of femininity — but not from the silhouette but from the complex of women that surrounded Monsieur Dior and his brand.”

Influenced by his sister Catherine, as well as his legendary design team members Mitzah Bricard and Marguerite Carré, the collection is a nod to Dior’s muses. Incorporating elements of activewear and casualwear (such as the “Feminity, the trap” T-shirt), Chiuri also plays with British pop-punk plaids by reimagining Macleod of Lewis tartans. The use of punk-inspired tartan skirts, masculine silhouettes and a plethora of rebellious detailing plays with the concept of uniforms and how “you gain strength by belonging to a group, while also remaining an individual.”

Following a similar suit, the collection’s overall theme of female solidarity is highlighted with the symbol, “L’Union fait la force,” — which means “strength in unity.”

“Before, the general view of Dior was rather patriarchal and even limited,” Chiuri said. “But there were many women that influenced Mr. Dior and his brand. In reality, Dior is a synthesis of all these elements used to create new ideas. I like to show that his work has a feminized idea, not due to silhouette but to the multiplicity of feminine influences.”
