Crocheting Your Own Clothes Is the Way to Go
When you crochet your own dresses, the only limit is your creativity.
Crocheting is a craft where you can make almost anything. Using a crochet hook and whatever size, texture and color of yarn or thread you desire, you can create homemade plushies, blankets and scarves. The most skilled crocheters use this hobby to make their own clothes, and these aren’t small projects. Crocheting has made big waves in fashion, giving creative control to anyone who can master this artform.
Designers like Amber Kollar have elevated crochet clothing by using her talent to found a high fashion brand called Spicie. Her crochet tops and dresses are a perfect blend of intricate web-like design and grungy dishevelled loose strings and fabric. Her Spinosum dress is made up of pentagons and hexagons of varying sizes. With the fabric being thickest near the top and bottom of the dress and most sparse around the torso it gives the effect of a cutout side. The dress has even found favor with celebrities, being worn by rapper Ice Spice to the 2022 BET Hip Hop Awards.
On TikTok, creators like Sarah (@that_crochet_gurl00) and Dejane Angel (@angellovecrochetcompany) share the process of making their own prom dresses by hand. Sarah crocheted a beautiful baby pink maxi tube dress, adorned with rhinestones on top and pink roses around the bottom. She also crafted a matching jacket made of roses and a crocheted purse to give a cohesive look.
Dejane made a prom look that gives classic Hollywood, crocheting a black and white dress with a slit from one leg down, embellished with intricate threading and gemstones throughout. The puffy cloud-like material surrounding the slit along with her wearing a pair of arm-length black gloves are accents that complete the look.
It’s amazing to see what designers, small business owners and hobbyists can achieve through crocheting clothes. So while crochet is great for making home decor like rugs and throws, it’s also a liberating way to have full control over what you wear.
