Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams Arrives in Tokyo

The exhibit showcases Dior’s connections with Japan over the years.

POSTED BY KASEY O'CONNELL

A new exhibit showcasing Christian Dior’s work has just opened at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, showcasing the French designer’s connection to Japan throughout their 75-year history. The Dior: Designer of Dreams exhibition has also had successful shows in Paris, London, Shanghai, Chengdu, Doha and New York, but around half of the pieces exhibited at the Tokyo exhibit are being shown for the first time.

The exhibit begins with a room featuring Dior’s iconic New Look. Later rooms explore the friendship between Dior and Japan through letters, sketches, and events in the country. The exhibition was designed by architect Shohei Shigematsu, who paid tribute to Japanese culture with a room covered in translucent traditional washi paper pasted over wooden frames.

Visitors at the museum will be able to see iconic looks from Christian Dior as well as later artistic directors such as Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Ferré, John Galliano, Raf Simons, and Maria Grazia Chiuri. The exhibition will run from December 21, 2022, to May 28, 2023.
