BIIANCO’s ‘Mixtape #2’ Is All You Need
Heartbreaks, queer love songs, and tarot cards, wrapped into one musical project.
You know the sensation when you go on a night out and different emotions (perhaps, different substances too) circulate in your veins? And suddenly, you feel overwhelmed with a weird mix of anxiety and euphoria? Your tired body literally melts and vibrates to the sound of immersive music. This is exactly how BIIANCO’S project ‘Mixtape #2’ feels like. It’s hopeful, it’s hopeless but first of all, it’s exciting. BIIANCO will give you everything that you want and need to hear.
A non-binary artist, musician, and producer broke their ‘Mixtape #2’ into 4 chapters: Love (or Denial), Grief, Rage, and Rebirth, which helped them to recover from emotional trauma and heartbreak. This is how they describe their creative method. ‘I was writing to process what was happening in real-time, and as a result, it became an excruciatingly raw look at how trauma sets the stage for self-perpetuated cycles of wrong turns and heartbreak.’
Although ‘Mixtape #2’ is BIIANCO’s personal project, it is full of exciting collaborations with artists who inspire them on a daily basis. Luna Shadows sings a queer love song ‘WHAT’S IN YOUR HEAD’. ‘In a lot of queer relationships, there’s a confusing period at the beginning full of questions -- are they into me, or are we just friends??? Should I kiss them??? WHAT’S IN THEIR HEAD?,’ explains BIIANCO. Kaleena Zanders is featured on the newest single, ‘A Resurrection Of All Sorts,’ BIIANCO’s statement as a non-binary artist in a cis-male dominated community. ‘It is about more than just overcoming heartbreak, it’s also about a producer overcoming imposter syndrome and stepping into their style,’ they share.
‘Mixtape #2’ sounds as though Caribou, The XX, and MS MR had the coolest and most talented baby. Most importantly though, it recognizes the voice, until recently unheard and ignored in the industry. BIIANCO themselves admit that finding that voice lay at the very core of their project. ‘It’s the first body of work to ever be released by me, BIIANCO. Written, engineered, produced by me, sprinkled with collaborations with artists who inspire me.’ The best proof that real talent and an authentic sound are genderless.
Along with the release, BIIANCO is launching an interactive Tarot card website, where a custom reading leads to a tailored Spotify playlist. Here’s an example of a playlist for someone who pulled the Fool card.
