A Sweatshirt Doesn't Need Reinventing, Just Better Artwork
WACKO MARIA x Champion proves it.
A good sweatshirt has one major advantage over most statement pieces: it doesn't ask you to build an entire outfit around it. But that doesn't mean every crewneck needs to disappear into the background. Give a familiar silhouette a graphic worth looking at, and suddenly the most straightforward item in your wardrobe becomes the one doing all the work.
WACKO MARIA and Champion are putting that idea to the test with their first collaboration built around Champion's iconic Reverse Weave construction. Launching October 31, the five-piece capsule includes a crewneck, two pullover hoodies, a zip-up hoodie and sweatpants, with heavyweight fleece providing the foundation for WACKO MARIA's distinctive graphics.
The Back Is Where Things Get Interesting

The standout crewneck keeps its front relatively restrained, with subtle chest embroidery, before revealing a much larger graphic by tattoo artist TIM LEHI across the back. A longtime creative collaborator of WACKO MARIA, Lehi brings an illustrated edge to a garment that might otherwise look like standard collegiate sportswear.
That contrast is what makes the design work. A sweatshirt with a huge graphic across the chest can dominate everything around it. Move the artwork to the back, and the piece becomes more versatile: the front stays understated under a jacket, while the illustration gets its moment when the outer layer comes off.
The crewneck also comes in five colors: Silver Grey, Black, Amber Brown, Light Blue and Light Pink. The lighter shades offer a different mood from the familiar black-and-grey sportswear palette, without requiring a change in silhouette or styling.
Reverse Weave Has Earned Its Place

Champion developed Reverse Weave in the 1930s to help reduce shrinkage. The construction turns the fleece fabric horizontally across the body and adds side gussets to accommodate movement. It's a practical solution that eventually became one of the brand's most recognizable signatures.
For this collaboration, all five pieces use heavyweight 11.5-ounce cotton-blend fleece. That weight gives the collection a substantial foundation, while WACKO MARIA adds its own patterns, embroidery and graphic placement. Archival-inspired blue neck labels referencing Champion's 1970s designs provide a quieter nod to the sportswear label's history.
I like collaborations that understand what made the original piece worth wearing in the first place. There's little point in stripping away the character of a classic sweatshirt just to attach two logos. Here, the construction remains familiar while the artwork changes the attitude.
Five Pieces, Different Levels of Statemen

The two pullover hoodies take different approaches: one puts oversized WACKO MARIA lettering across the front, while the other pairs chest embroidery with a prominent “Wacko Maria Paradise” print on the back. The zip-up hoodie follows the bold rear-graphic approach, and relaxed sweatpants with thigh embroidery and ribbed cuffs round out the range.
The WACKO MARIA x Champion Reverse Weave collection launches October 31, 2026, at noon Japan Standard Time through Champion Japan, WACKO MARIA and select retailers. Prices on Champion Japan range from ¥26,400 for the crewneck and sweatpants to ¥30,800 for the zip-up hoodie.
The appeal isn't complicated. These are familiar clothes with a little more personality, built around a construction that has lasted for decades. Sometimes the best collaboration isn't the one that changes everything. It's the one that gives a classic a reason to be looked at again.
