Vivienne The Grand Dame Of Punk And Courtney Love, The Poster Girl For Grunge, Unite For Westwood’s New Campaign
The Fall/Winter 2022 campaign puts Battersea on the map.
Vivienne Westwood is considered an icon with her ‘zero fuck’s given’ force of nature and her ties to the origins of the punk movement. Nowadays Vivienne works alongside her partner and the brand’s creative director Andreas Kronthaler. The duo has been based in Battersea where the Royal College of Art’s Design & Innovation campus has been built which inspired them to have Jurgen Teller shoot the new campaign around the area “where everything is born”. Kronthaler went on to explain how so many “young people and creatives” have been “moving to the area” and claims Battersea is “the new Brick Lane”.
Alongside a roster of street cast talent, the campaign features friend of the house and ‘Hole’ singer Courtney Love. Who Kronthaler describes as being “very similar to Vivienne in some ways. They are both outspoken with important opinions and aren’t afraid to express them”. Love also packs on the praise for Vivienne and Andreas describing them as “such a mighty force” together.
When talking about the shoot Love shared her trepidation about appearing with very little make-up and limited retouching, but the words of “a genius scholar” who said “the only truly transgressive act one can do, is to be a woman aging in public” gave her confidence. Love and Westwood hold hands in the image whilst wearing high neck dresses in white and black. Love also credited her confidence to “taking the hand of a leader” that would help her “go to the place beyond the Instagram filters that are destroying our lives”. The singer concludes “it was exhilarating working with these two outlaws and I’m honored that they asked me”.
