Why High Earners In The UK Don't Feel Rich

HSBC study reveals shift in wealth perception.

POSTED BY ZOE TYLER

A recent 2025 HSBC study reveals a surprising truth about wealth in the U.K.: even when earning around £213,000 a year—roughly six times the average salary—many high earners still don’t feel truly rich.

The Wealth Paradox

For many, a six-figure income doesn’t automatically translate to feeling affluent. Despite hitting the numerical benchmark, there’s a gap between high earnings and the sense of prosperity—proving that wealth is as much about perception as it is about pounds.

Luxury, Redefined

Forget flashy cars and designer labels—only about 44% of high earners believe luxury goods truly define affluence. Instead, they’re chasing experiences: early retirement, frequent globetrotting, and a lifestyle that prioritizes meaningful moments over material excess.

Securing the Future

When it comes to financial goals, security reigns supreme. With 42% focused on retirement savings, 36% building emergency funds, and 25% planning to leave a legacy for future generations, this study highlights a practical shift: true wealth is about stability, planning, and a secure future rather than just the flash of luxury.
