Tyla's Coming in Hot To the Fashion Scene
The 22-year-old is making us sweat just from her looks.
Ever since the pop-superstar Tyla emerged onto the scene in 2023, people have been loving her music. From her debut hit ‘Water,’ to her later album release ‘TYLA,’ this diva has been getting her ‘tigers’ on their feet, diving head-first into the industry with nothing but authenticity, ferocity, and above all, good vibes. It’s no wonder this woman has managed to not just break into the music industry, but the fashion one too.
From being the cover star of popular magazines such as: DAZED, Elle, and Glamour, to rocking the most unique and eccentric of looks in her music videos (of course we have to give an honorable mention to the 'Jump’ video. Our girl knows how to keep things simple yet still bold) Tyla is showing that she’s more than just the music.
Even through her personal style and streetwear Tyla knows just how to turn heads and look like art. The South African singer shared her inspirations and influences when interviewed by Fashionista magazine, stating that she loves the Y2K style and the noughties looks of musicians like Britney Spears and Rihanna. She also claims to like ‘a bit of messiness and something a bit shocking.’ We can definitely see what she means as we don’t think we’ve actually seen her wear something that hasn’t purposefully been ripped! Not just this, her micro crop tops, exceptionally mini mini skirts, and star-studded bralettes definitely fit into her love for the ‘shocking.’ From animal prints that match her brand image, to mismatching and experimental fabrics, Tyla is one for both the shock-factor and the wow-factor.
Tyla’s various appearances at awards shows and, of course, her performances, have also given us nothing but solid evidence that this icon knows how to leave zero crumbs when it comes to style! A couple of notable examples come firstly from her performances of ‘Water’ and ‘Push 2 Start’ at the 2024 EMA’s. She rocked short shorts and a shining, low cut bodysuit with a criss-crossed back. Even before the performance Tyla looked like a baddie, paying homage to the late R&B queen Aaliyah by wearing a vintage Roberto Cavalli dress first worn by her in 2000. Also, when making her US TV debut performing on Jimmy Fallon, she glistened and gleamed like the shiniest of pop stars, wearing a shimmering two-piece by Christian Cowen and Retrofete, and the micro skirt was adorned with silver stars.
All in all, we think it goes without saying that Tyla has truly proven to not only be a musical genius, but also, a fashion It girl. This pop princess was right when she sang “they never had a pretty girl from Joburg, see me now and that’s what they prefer.” Because yes, we do prefer this Y2K goddess now that she’s on the scene and continually making us sweat.
