Trump's Tariffs Could End Ultra-cheap Fashion Hauls

Shein and Temu face price increases.

Fast fashion might be about to get a lot less fast—and way more expensive. In a bold move that’s sending shockwaves through the style world, former President Donald Trump has eliminated the ‘de-minimis’ rule, a loophole that let global mega-brands like Shein and Temu ship cheap goods straight to U.S. doorsteps without paying a dime in tariffs. Translation? Those $4 crop tops and $1 earrings may soon come with a not-so-cute price hike.

Say Goodbye to $200 Carts for $27

Under the old rule, any package valued under $800 could enter the U.S. tariff-free. Shein, Temu, and their bargain-bin brethren used this to flood TikTok wardrobes with trendy hauls—fast, cheap, and straight from overseas warehouses. Now that the loophole is closed, experts say prices could jump by up to 30%. Your $5 pleated mini skirt? Try $6.50. And while that may not sound wild, for Gen Z budget babes and college kids living off iced coffee and vibes, it could be a dealbreaker.

A Turning Point for Fashion?

The change comes as fast fashion’s reputation is already on thin ice. Between environmental concerns and labor issues, critics have long been side-eyeing the industry. Now, this tariff shake-up could accelerate a shift toward slower, more sustainable options. Think thrifting, resale apps, and capsule wardrobes over micro-trends. If prices rise, secondhand suddenly looks a lot more chic—and ethical.

Retail Gets Political (Again)

Unsurprisingly, the move has rare bipartisan support. Lawmakers argue U.S. retailers need a fair shot, especially with small businesses drowning under the weight of imported discount goods. Imports under the ‘de-minimis’ threshold exploded from $5.5 billion in 2018 to $66 billion by 2023. That’s not just a blip—it’s a business model, now under serious threat.

Will Shoppers Adapt?

So, what now? Shein and Temu might try to absorb some of the cost, but odds are, your shopping cart will feel the pinch. The real test will be how loyal their audience stays when the prices stop being too-good-to-be-true. Will shoppers cut back? Switch platforms? Or finally give in to that thrifted Ralph Lauren polo they’ve been eyeing?

One thing’s for sure: the fashion game just changed. And whether you’re a serial hauler or a casual cart queen, the era of throwaway trends might be facing its final season.
