'Squid Game: The Challenge,' Netflix Announces New Reality Series
A competition inspired by the hit drama series.
Tuesday, Netflix announced a casting call for its new reality series based on the hit show Squid Game. The reality series, Squid Game: The Challenge will have 456 real players enter a competition to win $4.56 million, like the scripted series.
“Squid Game took the world by storm with Director Hwang’s captivating story and iconic imagery. We’re grateful for his support as we turn the fictional world into reality in this massive competition and social experiment,” said Brandon Reid, Netflix VP of Unscripted and Documentary Series.
In the official statement released by Netflix, contestants will compete in a series of competitions inspired by the show. “The stakes are high, but in this game the worst fate is going home empty-handed,” said Netflix.
According to the streaming service, this would be the largest lump sum cash prize and largest cast in the history of reality television. The show will have 10 episodes filmed in the UK in a co-production effort between Studio Lambert and The Garden, responsible for reality shows such as Netflix’s The Circle and 24 Hours in A&E.
The series will have an open casting call. The hope is to have English-speaking contestants from all over the world. Submissions are available now on the official Squid Game casting website. Saturday, Netflix announced that their scripted drama, Squid Game, would be receiving a second season with Hwang Dong-hyuk returning to direct.
