SHEIN Faces Controversy Over Swastika Necklace

The fast-fashion brand SHEIN has been the subject of much criticism over the past few weeks after they were called out for selling a Swastika necklace their website. The news came just days after the controversy surrounding the brand retailing Muslim prayer mats as home decor with descriptions like “Fringe Trim Greek Fret Carpet” and “Flower Print Tassel Trim Carpet”.

Just like the mats, the necklace, labeled on the site as a "metal swastika pendant necklace”, was swiftly removed, but not before fashion influencer Marissa Casey Grossman captured a screenshot of the listing.

Grossman shared the screenshot with her 165k Instagram followers with a caption reading: “HOLY FUCK. I have zero words. I will NEVER be buying from @sheinofficial @shein_us EVER again. This is a company that I’ve bought from so much over the years and to see this is ABSOLUTELY disgusting. I didn’t believe this when I saw it— so did a simple search on their site. And, there it was.”

When questioned about the listing, the brand released the following statement: “SHEIN was not selling a Nazi swastika pendant, the necklace is a Buddhist swastika which has symbolized spirituality and good fortune for more than a thousand years. The Nazi swastika has a different design, it is pointed clockwise and tilted at an angle. However, because we understand the two symbols can be confused and one is highly offensive, we have removed the product from our site.”

“We are a global and all-inclusive brand and we are taking extreme measures to ensure that all items are cleared through a rigorous vetting process before we retail them,” their statement concluded.
