Self Care: The Importance Of Good Hygiene

Hygiene Tips 101

POSTED BY SUMAIYAH AKHTAR

In general when people discuss self care, they emphasise the idea of exercise, face masks and journaling. However, the importance of cleanliness and smelling good can play just as big of a role in improving your physical and mental health.

No one wants to smell bad and knowing you aren’t disrupting anyone’s nostrils can ultimately play a part in your confidence. So, here are a few tips you can incorporate to self care through the practice of good hygiene.

Don’t underestimate the power of water

Aside from the fact water is an essential part of survival and has multiple health benefits, it’s also a natural resource that can affect how you smell. Not only should you use it to bathe but drinking water can prevent unwanted issues like bad breath and body odor by flushing out toxins and waste from your system.

Give Apple Cider Vinegar a chance

Now, I’d like to think if you’re normal you hate the taste of Apple Cider Vinegar like me. With that being said, there’s a long list of benefits that come from ACV. One being, it can help balance your PH levels.

This means it’ll help with how your odor smells from your armpits to your vulva by killing any bacteria. It’ll also leave your skin glowing and can help with conditions such as dandruff and eczema. Just ensure you dilute it with water first.

Take care of your mouth

Brushing your teeth and flossing is a given. It may be worth investing in a water flosser to wash out any plaque and bacteria more efficiently. The tongue can sometimes be forgotten. And if you don’t brush your tongue, your breath WILL stink. No amount of mouthwash and gum is going to change that when you speak to people.

So, scrape that tongue! You can use your toothbrush or a tongue scraper. Also getting in the habit of oil pulling is a great way to wash everything out and neutralize your breath. It has also proven to help whiten your teeth. When you’re happy with your teeth, you will smile more, and when you smile more, you will feel happier and more confident. It creates a positive cycle.

Don’t forget the smaller parts of your body

I was mortified when there was even a conversation about washing your legs in the shower. Since a shower is meant to be a cleanse of your ENTIRE body. I feel like the topic that should exist is how many people remember to scrub their belly button. A 2012 study found that 67 different types of bacteria are in the average belly button.

Just like when you don’t wash your feet, it gets cheesy, well so will your navel. Everyone seems to have a skincare routine now but how many of you forget to wash behind your ears. Washing stops waxy deposits from accumulating and crusting behind your ears. It also keeps oil residue away from your hairline. The best way to remember washing behind your ears is by doing it as you wash your face.

Mental clarity can come from cleanliness so add the practice of good hygiene to your self-care to-do list and start summer 2023 with more self-confidence!
